"Spots Before Your Eyes"
A Collection of Vintage Television Commercials from 1962 to 1979
It's time to thrill again to the memory of those friendly, smiling faces and familiar voices with their toe-tapping jingles and mind grabbing catch phrases. They're back again to shower you with the gifts of "Magic Silicone", "Smooth Blend" coffee, "The Best Beer in the Business" and even "Inner Piece" with never any Hexachlorophene!
Here you'll see and hear folks you haven't even thought of in years, some in their early stages of professional development! There's Avery Schreiber reeking havoc with his destructive Doritos crunch. Adam West, (Batman) hawks the cleanliness and economy, (HA!) of natural gas. The late Mary Frann, (long before she was Bob's wife on "NEWHART") lets her fingers do the walking and Pat Boone extols the virtues of "Smooth Blend" Maxwell House Coffee to a humble Japanese public. A pre-Polaroid, (and pre-James Garner) Mariette Hartley is the studious spokesperson in a series of ads for Pacific NW Bell. Mario Andretti races "Zoomy" Johnny Lightning toy race cars around the track and a heavily sedated sounding sales lady helps a little girl select clothing for her Ideal Crissy doll. Chuck Foreman of the Minnesota Vikings, Jerry Fogel, ("The Mothers In Law") and Patty Deusche, ("The Match Game") bring us the 1978 Toyotas, ("The Cars of the Eighties") while Ford reminds us that it's sporty 1971 Torino is indeed a "Better Idea.
Meanwhile, in Canoga Park, a harried housewife fights a never ending battle against "Drops that Spot" with Cascade and it's a veritable "Who's Who" of character actors of the day in a really big ad for Yamaha. Here, guests at a ski lodge Mike Farrell (before B. J. Honeycut on MASH), Dick Wilson (Charmin's Mr. Whipple) and many others, "Keep It Quiet" about the new Yamaha Snow Mobile's quiet performance on the slopes.
Hanna Barbera Productions makes it's animated advertising influence felt. Daws Butler and Ted Cassidy characterize Snagglepuss and Koko for Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies, (which taste like a chocolate milkshake, only Crunchy!) and Janet Waldo and Howard Morris voice The White Rabbit and Alice who find themselves in Rexall Land. A very early Toucan Sam and the two baby toucans tell us, (musically and in pig Latin) how Froot Loops are "made with real fruit Aver-Flay". Tony and his Tiger son "Live it Up" on skates with Sugar Frosted Flakes and the Hamm's Bear entertains us with the help of his campy woodland band the "Tootin' Annies!"
Also included are regional spots for Disneyland at Christmastime 1968 and the 1973 "50 Happy Years of Disney Studios" celebration at the park and even a Technicolor television trailer for a reissue of "Sleeping Beauty" narrated by Gary Owens! You won't go hungry either with Pizza Inn's sumptuous buffet or the classic Jack In The Box Clown promising all kinds of tasty treats and Scott Paper Company "Has the papers to prove it."
