The World of Tomorrow

Through the Eyes of Yesterday!

An Historical 1963 Documentary to Promote the 1964-64 New York Worlds Fair!

What I am offering here is a truly remarkable item. It is a documentary about the New York World's Fair, which took place in Flushing Meadows, Queens from early 1964 through 1965. This rare, newsreel style documentary, produced in 1962-1963 by the New York World's Fair 1964-1965 Corporation, features on and off camera narration by famed commentator Lowell Thomas and showcases the design and construction of what is, arguably, the greatest World's Fair of all time!

Within the 30 minute span of this immensely informative and visually stunning film you will see models, concepts and architectural renderings of most of the over 200 exhibitions and "harmless entertainment" that was scheduled to appear at this historic fair, including all the International, Cultural and Religious pavilions. You will see United States Steel's centerpiece of the fair, The Unisphere, in a half-finished state. You will also see Shea Stadium, The Travelers Insurance Umbrella Building, the Charles Eames designed IBM "People Wall" exhibit and many of the other, now legendary, structures in their early stages of design and / or construction.

There are unique views of the famous Ford pavilion, Pepsi Cola's "It's A Small World" with "The Tower Of The Four Winds", General Electric's "Carousel of Progress" in "Progressland", The Illinois State Audioanimatronic "Mr. Lincoln" exhibit and other groundbreaking shows produced by the great Walt Disney and his Studio in California. There are also detailed representations of GM's Futurama, Bell Telephone's incredible History of Communication, The Transportation Building's "Trip To The Moon" and AMFs fabulous Monorail. There is great footage of the life size dinosaurs at Sinclair's Dinoland, models of Westinghouse and it's famed time capsule, Kodak's whimsically loopy, Jetsons Style exhibit, RCA's Color TV Studio and even a glimpse of the Vatican approved display of Michaelangelo's masterpiece, The Pieta. Yes, both the popular and even some of the NOT so popular attractions are all showcased in this amazing promotional film.

In addition to all of the above, there are interviews with World's Fair President, Chairman and Guru, (not just for this fair but for the1939 World's Fair, too!) Robert Moses. There are shots of visiting dignitaries of the day such as General Douglas MacArthur and The New York Summer Festival's Reigning Queen. There's a brief tribute by Moses (Robert, not the other one) to the late Pope John the 23rd and even a speech given by, then President, John F. Kennedy who was assassinated a short time after this footage was shot and did not live to see the opening of the fair he helped build and promote.

One of my favorite parts of this film, however, is a great sequence that pitches the other wonders of New York City to potential travelers to the upcoming fair. This campy section shows all the famous sights of New York City, circa 1963, through the eyes of a typical family of four. They come by car, (a sporty white Chevy Impala convertible) clad in kerchiefs sunglasses and great sixties sportswear. Crossing over the soon to be completed Verizzano Narrows Bridge, they soon retire to "pleasant" new accommodations near the fairgrounds for a bit of poolside fun. Then, off they go, with us in tow, on a whirlwind tour of Manhattan with stops at Rockefeller Center, The Great White Way of Broadway and Time Square, The Empire State Building and Lincoln Center's newest theaters. All this, in an effort to drive home the point that, 'Staying in New York is Fun!"

There is just not enough space on this page to share with you all the wonders of this rare and unusual documentary, but you can be sure that whatever your interest in the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair may be, you will be totally enthralled by this exceptional film. It is a presentation that showcases our world at the end of the revolutionary Populuxe Period or Eames Era, (as it has come to be known) bringing us right to the brink of the opening day of the fair, (April 22, 1964) and the dawn of a new age.

This unique film was expertly written and beautifully produced. It is presented, here, in rich black & white with all the wonder, optimism and bubbly industrial music in check. The sound and picture quality on this print is excellent and the transfer from film to digital master was professionally done. Now you can purchase this wonderful promo film here, on quality VHS tape or Sparkling DVD (please specify preference when ordering), for only....
